EdgeIX, a leading independent operator of settlement-free, multi-lateral layer 2 internet exchanges, has made the decision to cease the operation of its Singapore fabric by the end of February 2024.

Joe Wooller, EdgeIX Technical Manager, said “Our priority has always been to provide our peers with a peering fabric that is best in class. However, as we approach the one year anniversary of opening the Singapore fabric, we have re-evaluated the Singapore peering environment and made the decision to withdraw from that market.

This decision has been influenced by several factors - chief amongst which the increase in other IXPs commencing operations in Singapore over the last year. We feel that there are now sufficient IXPs in Singapore to provide networks with ample choice, and that market competition will ensure peering remains a cost-effective option for improving connectivity.

Both EdgeIX and our customers have also encountered challenges, regarding the costs imposed by data centre operators to interconnect with other customers within their facilities. We do not believe that the rates charged by operators in Singapore are reflective of the true cost of delivering the service and when compared to other facilities in the Asia Pacific region, these charges make it cost-prohibitive for peers to connect to new IXPs relative to those operated by the datacentre operators themselves.

EdgeIX still holds a strong commitment to delivering better connectivity through our peering fabric in underserved markets. We are continuing to seek additional growth opportunities in other suitable locations throughout the Asia Pacific region."

With immediate effect, the Singapore fabric will no longer be accepting new connections.
