EdgeIX completes national network roll out, helps network operators with free peering during COVID-19

14 April 2020 - EdgeIX, an independent operator of settlement-free, multi-lateral layer 2 internet exchanges, is pleased to announce the immediate availability of its peering network at multiple locations on Australia’s east coast.

Full national availability follows the successful launch in September 2019 of the EdgeIX carrier-neutral internet exchange service in Adelaide, Darwin, Hobart and Perth, as well as the first peering point located within an NBN POI.

From today, the EdgeIX peering fabric will be online and available in selected data centres throughout Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney, bringing the total number of on-net peering locations across Australia to 22.

Using the latest in switching technology from Arista Networks, the EdgeIX fabric is built with route server security and automation in mind, with IRRDB and RPKI security deployed out of the box and the exchange being an active participant in key industry initiatives such as MANRS.

“We are extremely pleased to support and be connected to EdgeIX, as we believe carrier neutral peering plays a critical role in enabling all providers access to low cost content.” said Philip Britt, Managing Director of Aussie Broadband. “Working with Joe has always been a pleasure and his insight to rollout peering into smaller, regional locations will greatly reduce latency between RSPs and content providers. As services push closer and closer towards the customer, EdgeIX will be a key enabler of this.”

Additionally, as a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic which has seen the Australian workforce shift to a working from home model in unprecedented numbers, network operators are experiencing an extraordinary increase in inter-network traffic.

During these uncertain times, EdgeIX would like to play its part in assisting the broader community by increasing the capacity and resiliency of the Australian internet fabric without network operators incurring further costs.

With this in mind, EdgeIX is pleased to announce that it will provide all interested network operators with free peering services at all EdgeIX locations until 15 April 2021, excluding data centre cross-connection charges. This offer is available immediately across all port speeds - 10 Gigabit, 40 Gigabit and 100 Gigabit - and EdgeIX can facilitate on-demand enablement and provisioning of new or additional peering ports.
